The Directorate for Culture and Art of Skopje (DKU) represents one of the most significant carriers and promoters of cultural life in the capital. Founded way back in 1948, it is counted among the organizations with the longest and richest tradition in the field of culture in Macedonia. With more than seven decades of active presence, it has built an impressive continuity in the creation, promotion and support of cultural values ​​at the national and international level.

Within the framework of its mission, the Directorate directs its interest to all areas of artistic creation – music, theater, literature, film, fine and applied arts – nurturing them through the most diverse forms of cultural production and presentation: concerts, theater and ballet performances, exhibitions, publishing, promotions, film screenings, seminars, workshops and multimedia events.

In addition to organizing programs through which the work of domestic and foreign artists is presented, DKU actively develops its own production, which enriches the cultural scene of Skopje and beyond.

Its rich portfolio includes drama and ballet productions, exhibitions of top Macedonian artists, literary publications, sound carriers, video and multimedia content, which testify to the long-term commitment to the support and affirmation of artistic expression. One of the most recognizable features of the Directorate is its openness to international cooperation and intercultural dialogue. During its existence, DKU realized a large number of joint projects with institutions, festivals and cultural organizations from Europe and the world, thus actively contributing to the promotion of Macedonian culture on the international stage.

The directorate is the founder and organizer of several traditional events of particular importance for the city of Skopje, among which are the festivals "Skopje Summer", "Autumn Music Festivals", "Blues and Soul", and the events "Graduation Parade", "European Skopje Days" and others. These events represent important cultural platforms that enrich the offer of the city and attract numerous domestic and foreign audiences.

With a clearly defined vision for the development of culture as a public interest and as a driver of social development, DKU continues to nurture the tradition of creating and supporting authentic cultural values, encouraging dialogue between different generations, genres and artistic practices. Through its program, the institution constantly strives to raise the cultural life of Skopje, turning the city into a lively cultural hotspot that connects artists, institutions and audiences.

Three festivals represent leading cultural initiatives in Macedonia, each with its own unique approach to cultural development - summer, urban and multi-genre ("Skopje Summer"), autumn, formal and focused on classical and contemporary music ("Autumn Music Festivals") and specialized in blues and soul genres, with an emphasis on alternative scenes and international performers (Blues and Soul Festival) - which together shape the contemporary cultural landscape, promoting public engagement, internationalization and development of domestic creativity.

The festivals "Skopje Summer", "Autumn Music Festivities" and the Blues and Soul Festival create inclusive platforms for exchange and collaboration, where different genres (classical, contemporary, jazz, ethnic, traditional, blues and soul music), disciplines (music, theater, film, visual art, literature) and cultural perspectives come together in a creative and engaging dialogue. This encourages civic involvement, cultural mobility and development of the local scene in the spirit of openness, diversity and equal opportunities.

Although the festivals are traditionally held in Skopje, their program includes authors and performers from other cities and countries, which strengthens their role as leading platforms for cultural cooperation and international promotion of domestic creativity.

In the last five and a half decades, there have been thousands of programmers, more than ten thousand participants and a few hundred thousand visitors. Yet the numbers and the statistics do not always have to be an expression of the essence when it comes to the accomplishments in the creative activity and art. That is why the numbers are replaced with the fact of the continuous active existence, the continuous presence among the artists and the audience.
